New details have emerged suggesting that aerobic fitness, muscle strength, and flexibility are the main components included in an adult fitness test being introduced Wednesday by the U.S. government.

Very tellingly, the test will feature several of the exercises done by millions of students each year as they strive for a Presidential Physical Fitness Award.

Melissa Johnson, executive director of the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports, told the Associated Press

that the new test for people 18 and older who are in good health was developed because baby boomers kept asking whether there was a physical-fitness test available similar to the ones they took as students.

Background investigation with this report indicates that the aerobic part of the test consists of a one-mile walk or 1.5-mile run, while the strength tests include push-ups and half sit-ups.

Very tellinlgy, the sit-ups are done for one minute and the push-ups are done until a person can’t do any more. A “sit-and-reach” exercise is used to measure flexibility.

On a concluding note, the AP reported that participants can enter their scores online and get results that show where they rank among people in the same age group.

According to reports from the Associated Press, it has been stated that a new study suggests that more than half of all insured Americans regularly take prescription drugs to treat chronic health problems, with drugs to lower high blood pressure and cholesterol the most widely used.

Very tellingly, the Medco Health Solutions Inc. analysis of prescription records from 2001 to 2007 revealed that 51 percent of American adults and children were taking one or more prescription drugs for a chronic condition in 2007, compared to 50 percent in 2006, and 47 percent in 2001.

It is noteworthy of mention that regular use of medications to treat chronic health problems occurred in all demographic groups:

Three out of four people 65 or older.
Almost two-thirds of women 20 or older.
52 percent of adult men.
One in four children and teenagers.
Furthermore, the AP news wire service stated that the study found that among older Americans, 28 percent of women and nearly 22 percent of men take five or more medicines on a regular basis.

It should be noted that medco manages prescription benefits for about one in five Americans.

On a concluding note, the wire service stated that experts said the study findings reflect both worsening public health and better medicines for chronic conditions and more aggressive treatment by doctors.

According to the latest News and Numbers report from the federal Agency for Healthcare Research, it has been reported that only 12 percent of the 228 million adults in the United States have the health literacy skills to manage their own health care proficiently.

Reportedly, it was stated that health literacy skills — which describe a person’s ability to obtain and use health information to make appropriate health care decisions — include weighing the risks and benefits of different treatments, knowing how to calculate health insurance costs, and being able to fill out complex medical forms.

It should be noted that according to the study, people with poor health literacy skills may have worse health care outcomes and face an increased risk of medical errors.
A 2003 survey found that:

12 percent of American adults had proficient health literacy skills.
53 percent had intermediate skills, such as being able to read instructions on a prescription label and determine the right time to take medication.
22 percent had basic skills, such as being able to read a pamphlet and understand two reasons why a disease test might be appropriate despite a lack of symptoms.
14 percent had below-basic skills, which means they could accomplish only simple tasks such as understanding a set of short instructions or identifying what’s permissible to drink before a medical test.

Recent details have emerged indicating that according to a new review of recent research, the jury is still out on whether psychotherapy can help older people with depression.

Reportedly, drawing from the study, among the small number of patients studied, there were some signs that a treatment called cognitive behavioral therapy could help older patients manage their depression, at least compared to those waiting to start therapy.

Still, on an overall analysis, lead review author Kenneth Wilson, of the University of Liverpool, in England went on record to state that: “the findings do not provide strong support for psychotherapeutic treatments in the management of depression in older people.”

For interested persons, the review of studies appears in the latest issue of The Cochrane Library, a publication of The Cochrane Collaboration, an international organization that evaluates medical research.

Depression is a common but often undiagnosed problem among older people. “A significant proportion of older people with the condition will describe themselves as experiencing a loss of enjoyment and a feeling of ill health rather than sadness or a feeling of depression,” Wilson said.

He goes on to add that in spite of stronger evidence of psychotherapy helping younger people, “several complications make it hard to say whether psychotherapy could be beneficial among older people.”

New details have emerged pointing to the fact that a new study from the University of Pennsylvania suggests that women may be at increased health risks due to their higher level of discomfort about being weighed in public.

Very tellingly, the study showed that college-age females, in comparision to their male counterparts, experience high degrees of discomfort at the prospect of being weighed in the presence of others.

Furthermore, according to the study’s authors, it is believed that some women may avoid necessary tests and treatments when a doctor visit includes a step on a public scale.

As a noted expert, Andrew B. Geier, lead author and a doctoral candidate in the Department of Psychology in the Penn School of Arts and Sciences put it: “Weighing concern may make these women, particularly those who are overweight and already at risk for certain ailments, less likely to visit a doctor, Hopefully, this data will show the great advantage that can be had with just a small, inexpensive change in clinic policy: weighing patients in private.”

In addition to his assessment, it should be mentioned that the study also revealed that observers generally overestimate women’s weight while women tend to believe that people are underestimating their weight due to slimming clothes or cosmetics.

What this could mean is that, while women in the study demonstrated they do not want people to know their weight, their true weight was lower than others’ estimates and a public weighing would correct the misperception.

In addition, the study concludes that a partial source of female discomfort comes from the participants’ own sense that they are overweight.

Or as Geier aptly put it: “The real danger here is the heavier a person is, the more discomfort they feel and thus the more likely they may find reasons to skip appointments, These may be the very people that need access to these clinics the most. If a person knows that he or she is going to be provided privacy during the weighing process, that could be a major relief, thereby tipping the scales to get them to go and get these potentially life-saving tests.”

According to research published in the journal Neuropsychopharmacology, it has been suggested that a drug commonly used to treat severe acne can lead to depressive behaviour in mice.

It is noteworthy of mention that since the drug’s introduction in the early 1980s there have been controversial reports of depression and suicidal behaviour that may have occurred in some people taking Roaccutane.

Very tellingly, this has led to the drug’s manufacturers, Roche, including a warning in the product information that taking the medication may cause depression, psychosis and suicidal behaviour.

Nonetheless, the chemical mechanism by which this might happen has never been established.

Background investigation into this article depicts that in new independent research, scientists at the universities of Bath and Texas at Austin gave Roaccutane to mice over a period of six weeks, and then monitored the rodents’ behaviour.

Reportedly, they discovered that while there was no change in the physical abilities of the mice, the rodents spent significantly more time immobile in a range of laboratory assessments designed to test their stress responsiveness - suggesting that administration of Roaccutane increases depression-related behaviour in mice.

As Dr Sarah Bailey from the Department of Pharmacy and Pharmacology at the University of Bath puts it: “Without more research it is difficult to say for sure whether the same link applies to people taking the drug. However, establishing a link between the active molecules within the drug and a change in depression-related behaviour, albeit in mice, is an important step forward in our understanding of the effects of this drug in the wider context of brain function.

“To date the only evidence for any link with patients has come from individual case reports and such patient data is complicated by the psychosocial effects of having severe acne.

“This laboratory evidence provides a useful model for future research into Roaccutane and understanding how this family of compounds affects the brain.”

It is noteworthy of mention that according to related experts, roaccutane belongs to a group of medicines called retinoids - vitamin A-related compounds known to affect development of the nervous system. For this reason Roaccutane is not prescribed to pregnant women.

Dr. Bailey elaborates: “Previously scientists thought that retinoids were only important in the development of the nervous system. Now there is a growing interest in retinoids as regulators of different aspects of brain function in adults. While our research is the first to demonstrate that retinoids are capable of influencing depression-related behaviours, these compounds may also play a role in the pathology of Alzheimer’s disease and schizophrenia”.

To conclude, this research was conducted through a collaboration between Dr. Sarah Bailey (Department of Pharmacy and Pharmacology, University of Bath) and Dr. Michelle Lane (Department of Human Ecology, Division of Nutritional Sciences, at the University of Texas at Austin) and funded by the University of Texas at Austin.

New details have suggested that a young asthmatic woman who collapsed and died shortly after arriving for her shift as a waitress at a bar may be the first reported death nationally from acute asthma associated with environmental tobacco smoke.

As was published in the February edition of the American Journal of Industrial Medicine, this case report by a Michigan State University physician, not only outlines circumstances under which the woman died, but also raises a number of issues regarding safety in the workplace.

Very tellingly, the report states the woman arrived at the bar in Michigan and, according to co-workers, seemed happy and healthy.

However, it was reported that about 15 or 20 minutes later she collapsed and within a few minutes died.

Kenneth Rosenman, an MSU professor of medicine and chief of the Division of Occupational and Environmental Medicine goes on record to state that: “This is the first reported acute asthma death associated with work-related ETS, Recent studies of air quality and asthma among bar and restaurant workers before and after smoking bans support this association.”

It is noteworthy of mention that in 2006, the surgeon general’s report concluded that ETS causes coronary heart disease, lung cancer and premature death. But at that time there was little hard evidence linking ETS to the exacerbation of asthma in adults.

However, Rosenman and colleagues believe this case provides plenty of evidence to link secondhand smoke to this death.

Or as he put it: “The autopsy clearly indicates she died from asthma. There was no other cause of death. Her death is consistent with what we know about exposures in bars like this. We know asthmatics are more susceptible to irritants and other particulates in the air. We know that particulate levels from secondhand cigarette smoke in bars like this reach sufficient levels to set off an asthma attack.”

Background investigation with this story further elaborates that being an occupational and environmental health physician, Rosenman said he also is concerned about the long-term effects of ETS on all employees, not just those with pre-existing conditions like asthma.

He elaborates: “As a consumer, I don’t have to go into that bar. But is it a safe environment for the employees? We have federal laws that say employers have to provide a safe and healthy workplace. This was clearly not a safe and healthy workplace for this employee. This death dramatizes the need to enact legal protections for workers in the hospitality industry from secondhand smoke.”

At this stage, it is currently offered statistically that in the United States, 23 states have already banned smoking in restaurants and bars. However, while many bar and restaurant owners say a smoking ban would hurt business, Rosenman argues that just the opposite is true.

“Consider that 75 percent of the population doesn’t smoke,” he said. “Banning smoking could actually serve to increase business. Studies of restaurants and bars in Boston, New York City, San Francisco and Washington D.C. all show business up since they banned smoking. Chicago went smoke free the beginning of this year.

According to Dr. Julie Gerberding, the director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it has been suggested that a hepatitis C outbreak traced to a Nevada endoscopy clinic may be “the tip of an iceberg” of safety issues at clinics across the country.

The Associated Press reports that as of last Friday, Las Vegas officials closed down the Endoscopy Center of Southern Nevada after it was determined that six patients contracted hepatitis C due to unsafe practices, such as the re-use of syringes and vials.

At this stage, it is noteworthy of mention that state health officials are now trying to contact about 40,000 patients who received anesthesia by injection at the clinic to tell them they should get tested for hepatitis C, hepatitis B and HIV.

The wire service states that Gerberding met Monday with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., to discuss the issue.

It is noteworthy of mention that, caccording to the AP, during a media conference call after their meeting, Reid and Gerberding strongly condemned practices at the clinic.

“This is the largest number of patients that have ever been contacted for a blood exposure in a health-care setting. But unfortunately we have seen other large-scale situations where similar practices have led to patient exposures,” Gerberding said during the conference call.

She concludes our report by stating that: “Our concern is that this could represent the tip of an iceberg and we need to be much more aggressive about alerting clinicians about how improper this practice is, but also continuing to invest in our ability to detect these needles in a haystack at the state level so we recognize when there has been a bad practice and patients can be alerted and tested.”

New reports from the Channel 4 news have suggested that: “People who suffer from acne are less likely to take exercise or excel at physical games.”

Drawing from a study of people from a national acne support group, it was discovered that people with acne tend to avoid participating in sports due to anxiety and self-consciousness about their skin.

Still, it should be noted that according to related experts, the psychological effects of skin conditions such as acne should not be underestimated.

Although this finding may be unexpected, the same experts advice that it is plausible considering that those with acne may try to shy away from situations in which they feel their skin will be open to evaluation by others.

Nonetheless, it should be noted that the study is limited by its small size, the age of the participants and its design, which cannot prove that it is the acne that is causing a withdrawal from physical sports.

However, other authority figures not directly linked to this study state that in spite of its limitations, the study does highlight that people with acne should be supported in whatever way is necessary to enable them to lead as normal and fulfilled a life as possible.

To conclude our report, Sir Muir Gray adds…The psychological effects of skin disease are always underestimated, except by those people who suffer from it.

New details have emerged suggesting that, according to researchers in Sweden, who studied more than 40,000 Swedish twins to determine the extent to which behavior, environment and genes each play a role ion the development of chronic bronchitis, although smoking is a known risk factor for respiratory diseases like chronic bronchitis, genes also play a significant role in its development.

As Jenny Hallberg, of the Department of Public Health Sciences at Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm wrote: “[S]moking behavior has a known genetic component and smoking is a primary risk factor for chronic bronchitis.

Furthermore, it was stated that Hereditability accounted for 40 percent of the risk for chronic bronchitis, but, interestingly, 14 percent of the genetic risk was also linked to a genetic predisposition to smoke, whether or not the individual actually smoked.

At this stage, it is noteworthy of mention that chronic bronchitis along with emphysema account for most cases of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD.

For interested persons, the research was published in the first issue for March of the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, published by the American Thoracic Society.

“[This] study on the population-based Swedish Twin Registry, showing a genetic effect for the development of chronic bronchitis that does not differ by sex is the first to our knowledge to quantify heritability of the disease,” she said.

To conclude this report, it is noteworthy of mention that the investigators are currently working on a clinical follow-up study that is relating clinical measures of lung function to obstruction. “We believe that it is important to also include testing of lung function to disentangle whether there are genetic differences by sex,” said Dr. Hallberg a related expert. “There is also data in the literature that social factors have different importance for smoking behavior in men and women. We know much less regarding the genetic influences.”
