Depressed People suffer from an inability to rid themselves of negative thoughts
Recent reports have emerged indicating that depressed people suffer from an inability to rid themselves of negative thoughts.
It is said that this due to the fact that they can’t turn their attention to other things.
The study’s co-author Jutta Joormann of the University of Miami in an Association for Psychological Science news release said: “They basically get stuck in a mindset where they relive what happened to them over and over again. Even though they think, ‘Oh, it’s not helpful, I should stop thinking about this, I should get on with my life,’ they can’t stop doing it.”
Very tellingly, it should be noted that the study authors gave tests designed to measure mental flexibility to 26 depressed people and 27 people who had never been depressed.
Delving further into this report, is noteworthy of mention that they looked at words on a screen for one second each and then were told to remember them in forward or backward order. Then they were asked to look at individual words and say where they were in the original order.

It is said that the persons who were depressed had a harder time with the task, especially if the words had negative meanings like “death” or “sadness.”
To conclude, Joormann says: “The order of the words sort of gets stuck in their working memory, especially when the words are negative.”
Recent reports have emerged indicating that an as increasing out-of-pocket expenses may force many cancer patients in the United States to do without drugs and doctor appointments and to cut back on food and other things they might need.
To reach this conclusion, the researchers looked at 216 cancer patients who sought help from the national nonprofit HealthWell Foundation.
This is a foundation that helps underinsured patients afford expensive medications.

Very tellingly, everyone except one patient had insurance, two-thirds were covered by Medicare and 83 percent had prescription drug coverage. Most of the patients were women (88 percent) with breast cancer (76 percent).
Nonetheless, it is noteworthy of mention that the the study didn’t examine whether patients suffered worse outcomes because of treatment choices they were forced to make due to financial problems.
Still, it should be pointed out that the researchers in fact did discover that patients took fewer medications due to costs and were less satisfied with their care when out-of-pocket expenses caused hardship.
“Overall, this study provides a patient-centered view of a reality of modern day cancer care — something that we call ‘financial toxicity,’” senior author Dr. Amy Abernethy, an associate professor in Duke’s medical oncology division, said in a Duke news release.
To conclude, Dr. Amy Abernethy said: “We used to think about chemotherapy toxicity in terms of bad side effects like vomiting, nerve pain, confusion and risk of fatal infection. Now we are starting to think in terms of how treatment choices impact real aspects of daily living such as the ability to buy groceries or not,”
It has been recently reported that age may not be the only factor that makes Testosterone levels drop.
On the contrary, a new study suggests that it’s more likely among older men with declining general health.
Delving further into this report, Australian researchers found that blood testosterone amounts didn’t fall in older men with optimal health and it should be noted that this perhaps may falsify prior research indicating age-related testosterone deficiency contributes to deteriorating health, fatigue and libido loss.

For the general public, the data, gathered as part of the Healthy Man Study, is scheduled to be presented Tuesday at the Endocrine Society’s annual meeting in Boston.
“Our interpretation is that age in and of itself does not reduce blood testosterone levels . . . but the accumulating disorders as men age, some preventable and some not, some genetic and some environmental, do have such an impact, albeit pretty modest,” said study author Dr. David Handelsman, a professor of reproductive endocrinology and andrology at the University of Sydney.
To conclude the report, Dr. David Handelsman says: “This would make the drive for testosterone treatment for the well-known — but overrated — age-related decline in blood testosterone misguided,” added Handelsman, also director of the university’s ANZAC Research Institute. “But, of course, we could be wrong.”
It has been reported that a new U.S. government report finds that adults who suffer with mental illness are four times more likely to suffer from alcohol dependence in comparison to those without such conditions.
According to the report, released Thursday by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), which was based on a 2009 nationwide survey, it was found that nearly 10 percent of adults diagnosed with a mental illness were also alcohol-dependent, compared to just 2.2 percent of those without such issues.

SAMHSA Administrator Pamela S. Hyde said in an agency news release states that “Mental and substance use disorders often go hand in hand. This SAMHSA study adds to the evidence of that connection.”
To conclude our report, Hyde adds: “Co-occurring mental illness and substance use disorders are to be expected, not considered the exception. Unfortunately, signs and symptoms of these behavioral health conditions are often missed by individuals, their friends and family members and unnoticed by health professionals. The results can be devastating and costly to our society.”
It has been recently reported that Men who have type 2 diabetes in addition to obstructive sleep apnea could very well find a regular exercise regimen very useful.
Not surprisingly, researchers linked to this story state that greater endurance from consistent physical activity can significantly boost survival rates for men with both condition.

===============================
The findings are significant since the prevalence of sleep apnea, which commonly occurs in people with diabetes and high blood pressure, is on the rise, the study authors noted.
“Recent findings suggest that patients with sleep apnea have an increased risk of dying of any cause compared with individuals without sleep apnea,” study co-author Dr. Skikha Khosla, an endocrinologist at the Washington, D.C. Veterans Affairs Medical Center and George Washington University, said in a news release from the Endocrine Society.
Dr. Khosla adds that good exercise capacity has already been linked to a lower risk of death in patients with type 2 diabetes.
It is noteworthy of mention that for the study, researchers analyzed 567 male veterans averaging 62 years of age who completed exercise fitness testing between 1996 and 2010.
To conclude, Khosla states that “Although these data are epidemiologic and our patient population was small, the trend we saw in mortality is impressive.”
Not Surprisingly, per the caption above, it has been recently reported that one’s health very well could be affected by too much work, media and even food.
According to recent reports conducted by Mary Jane Rotheram-Borus, a psychology professor at the University of California, Los Angeles, and co-director of the UCLA Center for Community Health and the Global Center for Children and Families has stated that a constant barrage from media sources have overloaded Americans and are having a detrimental effect on their mental and physical health.
She adds that all of this prosperity goes against the survival instincts that human beings adopted as they evolved.

The authority figure goes on to add that “We were groomed for millennia to survive on too little,” she said. “We didn’t have enough food. We didn’t have enough clothing. Our genetic code was built on those who could survive adversity.”
However, she states that but because it’s ingrained in human nature to enjoy what you have when you have it, people may have taken too well to having too much.
Rotheram-Borus cites these examples, Cheap fast food has led to Americans eating an average of 1,000 more calories a day than they need, Rotheram-Borus said. Constant media exposure creates stress while also numbing people to normal human interaction. And to pay for it all, people are working longer hours and enduring longer commutes.
Dr. Felicia Wong, a Los Angeles psychiatrist and a member of the American Psychiatric Association, said that the advent of text messaging and smart phones has added to people’s stress because they “create a pressure to be constantly available” that used to be endured only by doctors, police officers, firefighters and other professionals who spend much of their lives on call.
“Everyone is on call every minute of their lives now,” she said. “There’s no wonder people feel stressed out. Now mundane life is an emergency.”
It is noteworthy of mention that Rotheram-Borus adds that doctors are finding that when people cut back — by eating less or reducing their media viewing, for instance — their mental and physical health improves,
On a concluding note,
if people want to improve their health by cutting back, Rotheram-Borus and Wong suggest that they:
1. Set a consistent routine that is aligned with the values they want their children to have. For example, make family dinners the norm, rather than an occasional treat. “If you value your kids more than your job, you need to be at home for dinner,” Rotheram-Borus said. “If you want your kids to be balanced human beings, you can’t work 100 hours a week yourself.”
2. Take a time out before making a purchase. Be clear about what you need when you go into a store.
3. Cut back on your food intake, and choose healthy foods. Throw out all the junk food in your house. “Once you have it in the house, you’re very likely to eat it,” Rotheram-Borus said.
4. Turn off the cell phone and disconnect from other media for a set period of time each day. “The reality is, in most situations a text message can wait,” Wong said.
5. Remember that gifts don’t always have to be purchases. Experiences, favors and thoughtful gestures can be just as meaningful.
Recent reports have emerged indicating that according to a new research, poor sleep may be a factor in aggressive behavior among kids.
Very tellingly, according to the research, it was found that children who bully other kids are more likely to be sleepy during the day.
It is noteworthy of mention that in the study, researchers from the University of Michigan Medical School found that children with conduct problems at school were twice as likely to have sleep-disordered breathing problems or daytime sleepiness as other children who reported adequate amounts of sleep.

To this effect, Louise O’Brien, assistant professor in the University of Michigan’s Sleep Disorders Center and the departments of neurology and oral and maxillofacial surgery, said in a university news release that: “What this study does is raise the possibility that poor sleep, from whatever cause, can indeed play into bullying or other aggressive behaviors — a major problem that many schools are trying to address.”
On a concluding note, to improve children’s sleep quality, the researchers said, parents should:
• Remove TVs, phones and computers from kids’ bedrooms.
• Encourage children to get an adequate amount of uninterrupted sleep each night. That’s 11 to 13 hours a night for preschoolers and 10 to 11 hours nightly for school-aged kids.
• Make getting enough sleep a household priority.
Recent reports have emerged to the effect that high school students who identify as gay, lesbian or bisexual are more likely than their heterosexual peers to take unhealthy risks.
It is noteworthy of mention that the study was conducted by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and used national survey data from 2001-2009.
Very tellingly, it was discovered that rates of smoking, drinking or other drug use, risky sexual behaviors, suicidal behaviors and violence were higher among gay or bisexual teens than among their straight peers.

To that effect, Howell Wechsler, director of CDC’s Division of Adolescent and School Health (DASH), said in an agency news release that: “This report should be a wake-up call for families, schools and communities that we need to do a much better job of supporting these young people. Any effort to promote adolescent health and safety must take into account the additional stressors these youth experience because of their sexual orientation, such as stigma, discrimination and victimization. We are very concerned that these students face such dramatic disparities for so many different health risks.”
Supporting this statement, Laura Kann, chief of the Surveillance and Evaluation Research Branch at DASH, added in the news release that “For youth to thrive in their schools and communities, they need to feel socially, emotionally and physically safe and supported. Schools and communities should take concrete steps to promote healthy environments for all students, such as prohibiting violence and bullying, creating safe spaces where young people can receive support from caring adults, and improving health education and health services to meet the needs of lesbian, gay and bisexual youth.”
Recent reports have emerged from the Associated Press stating that Dr. Jack Kevorkian, dubbed “Dr. Death” because of his support for assisted suicide has died Friday in a hospital outside of Detroit.

Reportedly, a close friend of his told the AP that Kevorkian was listening to his favorite music by Johann Sebastian Bach shortly before his death. The friend said he was conscious Thursday night and was looking ahead to discharge and rehabilitation.
It is noteworthy of mention that Kevorkian, who claimed he assisted in more than 130 suicides, was an outspoken advocate for critically ill patients’ right-to-die.
Moreover, he was convicted in 1999 of second-degree murder and served eight years in a Michigan prison.
Recent reports have surfaced indicating that German drug maker Sandoz has announced that possible contamination with glass flakes has prompted the recall of two sizes of methotrexate injection vials sold under the Sandoz and Parenta brands.
It is noteworthy of mention that according to the company, the flakes may occur due to delamination of glass used to make the 50 milligram and 250 milligram vials. As was reported by the Los Angeles Times, the flakes could cause serious harm or death.
However, Sandoz is quick to add that they have not received any reports of such incidents. At this stage, it should be noted that the drug maker said patients should immediately stop using the products included in the recall, which covers 24 lots.
