It should be noted that God does not restrict these unclean animals without rhyme or reason. The matter is related directly to our sanctification. Food and diet were and are directly linked to one’s life physically, mentally and spiritually. There is a cosmic law which states: “You are what you eat!” and for this to be implemented amongst the Israelites, God’s plan for happiness was expressed in the levitical agricultural laws, dietary principles and systems of order.

When followed, the statutes of Leviticus and Deuteronomy provided an arrangement designed to make Israel the model for the planet in regards to peace and prosperity. This nation was to be the light of the world. An example for others to follow through which God desired to draw surrounding nations and the world to Himself as stated in Deut 4:1-8.

Delving further into this topic, the Lord showed what was the best diet in the choice made for Israel as He brought the Israelites out of Egypt, and undertook their training, that they might be a people for His own possession and through them He desired to bless and teach the world. He provided them with the food that could be used best for this purpose, which coincidentally was not flesh, but manna, “the bread of heaven.” It was only because of their discontent and their murmurings for the recipes of Egypt they were previously used to that animal food was given to them, and this only for a short time.

Still it should be noted that this use of meat brought disease and death to thousands. Nonetheless, the restriction to a non-flesh diet was never gladly accepted as apparently, it continued to be the cause of dissatisfaction among the old Israelites. Therefore, after their arrival in Canaan, they were permitted the use of animal food, but under careful restrictions, which tended to lessen the evil results. The use of the flesh of pigs was prohibited, as also of other animals and of birds and fish whose flesh was rendered unclean and unfit for humans. Of the meats permitted, the eating of the fat and the blood was strictly forbidden. Only such animals could be used for food as were in good condition. No creature that was torn, that had died of itself or from which the blood had not been carefully drained, could be used as food.

Nevertheless, in spite of all of these fantastic guidelines, now made clearer and explained by science, it should be pointed out that by departing from the plan divinely appointed for their diet, the Israelites suffered great loss. They desired a flesh diet, and they reaped its results. They never did reach God’s ideal of character, neither did they fulfill his purpose and needless to say, their level of health never matched what God had in mind.
