The Link between Sunlight and Anti-Depression

A person once told me that due to the fact that Seattle Washington is usually overcast with lots of rain, there is a high tendency for people to be depressed in that area. This may be a mere coincidence, but it has been said that sunlight deficiency leads to depression. This really is not surprising to most people. We know instinctively that bright skies are linked to elevated spirits and gray skies to depressed moods. This phenomenon is more marked in some people than others. Millions, from all walks of life, suffer from depression due to lack of sunlight.

The clinical term for this condition is Seasonal Affective Disorder (S.A.D.). It is said that people farthest away from the equator are affected most by SAD and are at a real risk of illness. As our distance from the equator increases, sun intensity decreases.

Inadequate sunlight can really affect us seriously. Especially in the colder seasons, this is especially true due to the fact that contagious viruses can sometimes be prevalent in such seasons and most of the time we are often trapped indoors with less fresh air for longer periods of time. We become deficient in healing vitamin D and fresh air from not getting out into the sun and breathing under air-conditioning.

Sunlight more or less elevates your mood, joy and optimism. Remember, depression has a detrimental effect on our immune system while a joyful heart is healing. Even the Bible supports this fact as it says in Proverbs 17:22 “A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.”

Therefore, whenever possible, get out in the sun and enjoy yet one of the many boons for health that the Good Lord has provided us with.
