and that should not be a surprise.

Dear Friends, if you read Psalm 139: 13-16 carefully, it becomes clear that King David understood that his body was a marvelous piece of God’s creative genius when he said, “I am fearfully and wonderfully made” (Psa. 139:14).

As a result, we are all “wonderfully made.” Therefore, since God made us all, we should look to His Word for instructions regarding what we are to eat. For those who chose to eat meat, (I personally don’t- since it’s too much of a hassle) you will discover that what meat you eat or anything you consume is not a trivial matter. It is much more important than you realize.

At this point in time, there are also important health reasons behind these dietary restrictions besides what these animals are assigned to do. Many unclean animals carry parasites that cause serious diseases in humans. Pigs, bears, squirrels and raccoons carry trichinosis and other diseases. If the same God issued laws on which the concept of quarantine is based (that is isolation and hygiene) in the book of Leviticus, He knew these animals that he has assigned to be a ‘clean-up crew’ of sorts for the ecology will come in contact with diseased substances, therefore, their tissues will not be conducive for consumption.

Therefore, this is to be taken into consideration because scavengers such as crabs and crayfish can transmit lung and liver flukes. People that frequently eat these creatures often have high rates of parasitic infections. In addition, filter-feeding animals, such as clams and oysters, may contain high concentrations of toxic heavy metals, pathogenic bacteria and viruses, making them dangerous for humans to eat.

That being stated, avoiding unclean meats is a fundamental step in preventing major parasitic diseases that afflict hundreds of millions of people around the world. When we eat what God has told us not to eat, we do so to our own detriment and we are downright disobeying God. Of course, we would bear the physical repercussions in sickness, but the sad part is we end up putting the blame back on God. Again, this verse says it best in Proverbs 19: 3: “People ruin their lives by their own foolishness and then are angry at the LORD.”

So, let’s see to it that we adhere to God’s word when it comes to not only improving and maintaining our health, but in ALL aspects of our lives.

In Friendship
