At this stage, let’s revisit the story of the animals in Noah’s ark. By now, most people must have heard the story of Noah. Most of us know that both clean and unclean animals were taken into the ark. In addition to his family, Noah was to take seven pairs of each clean animal and one pair of each unclean animal (Gen. 7:2).

Apparently, Noah understood the instruction in that there was a clear distinction between the two. God either must have previously made it known to him, either by a revelation or through some other means. Or, it’s very possible that the knowledge of such information was given to mankind prior to its being recorded in the bible during the time of the Jews. Suffice it to say it’s not EVERYTHING that happened from creation till revelation that is in the Bible.

However, I think the following may be the way Noah was able to differentiate between the clean and clean animals.

Dear Friends, Enoch was Noah’s great grandfather and must have known the difference between clean and unclean animals in addition to a lot of other things of that nature, since it says the following in a description of Chapter 3 of The Book of Jasher mentioned elsewhere in this chapter-“Enoch Reigns over the Earth. Enoch Establishes Righteousness upon the Earth, and after Reigning Two Hundred and Forty Years is Translated.”

So, chances are Noah must have learned a lot of God’s laws and ways since it says in Chapter 3 of the book that:

-And the spirit of God was upon Enoch, and he taught all his men the wisdom of God and his ways, and the sons of men served the Lord all the days of Enoch, and they came to hear his wisdom.

-And Enoch taught them wisdom, knowledge, and the ways of the Lord; and he made peace amongst them, and peace was throughout the earth during the life of Enoch.

-And Enoch reigned over the sons of men two hundred and forty-three years, and he did justice and righteousness with all his people, and he led them in the ways of the Lord.

So, from reading the excerpt above, it appears this may perhaps be the reason why God simply told Noah he was to take seven pairs of each clean animal and one pair of each unclean animal (Gen. 7:2) because Noah must have known the differences between the two classifications based on his link to Enoch and the knowledge of God’s laws at that time.

Therefore, I believe, for what it is worth, even if it’s for entertainment, this book is definitely worth reading for people who may be curious as to what may have happened in historical times not necessarily included in the Bible.

Let’s face it, several parties do say the Bible as we know it today may perhaps be incomplete, so it can’t hurt to explore what may have not been included in the 66 books we have today. I tend to believe as long as the timelines are similar and the stories are not twisted, perhaps some of these so-called “Lost Books of the Bible” could and should be  supplemental reading material for Christians and/or everyone in general.

That being said, (getting back to the subject of this article), after Noah left the ark, God blessed him and his sons, and put the “dread of man” on every beast, bird and fish (Gen. 9:1-2).

Next, when speaking of the entire animal kingdom, God said to Noah, “Into your hand are they delivered. Every moving thing that lives shall be meat for you; even as the green herb have I given you all things. But flesh with the life thereof, which is the blood thereof, shall you not eat” (vs. 2-4).

Let’s go over this in more detail:

God’s Covenant with Noah

1 Then God blessed Noah and his sons, saying to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the earth.

2 The fear and dread of you will fall on all the beasts of the earth, and on all the birds in the sky, on every creature that moves along the ground, and on all the fish in the sea; they are given into your hands.

3 Everything that lives and moves about will be food for you. Just as I gave you the green plants, I now give you everything.

4 “But you must not eat meat that has its lifeblood still in it. 5 And for your lifeblood I will surely demand an accounting. I will demand an accounting from every animal. And from each human being, too, I will demand an accounting for the life of another human being.

Since a lot of people erroneously interpret verse 3 to mean humans can eat any living creature, let’s analyze the verses 1-4 above thoroughly:

Verses 1-2: Humans are again given dominion and authority over all animals as God intended and ordained in Genesis 1: 26-28. The fear of mankind is also put in every wild animal.

Verse 3: Due to the fact that all vegetation had been destroyed, till farming could allow for plants and trees to produce seed bearing yield, some animals had to be eaten for a while to augment whatever food Noah may have stored in the ark or whatever wild plants and trees could have yielded fruit, as it says in Genesis 8: 11 that the dove he sent out to see if the water had receded from the surface of the ground eventually brought back a leaf from an olive tree. Which means perhaps some trees survived the flood and had to be given time to yield some fruit.

However, in verse 4, it becomes apparent that in regards to meat consumption, discretion is to be exercised and this is presented as follows:

Verse 4: Any flesh of animals which contains or retains its lifeblood must not be eaten AND the ones that DON’T retain their lifeblood need to have this component extracted.

This forms part of the distinction between the Unclean and Clean animals.

This perhaps could be scientifically explained in the fact that when considering most unclean animals, their flesh contains much intra-cellular fat or particles of fat inside the cells themselves, (for example the pig) while in other animals, the fat is found almost exclusively outside these cells in the connective tissues, in the form of fat cells. That’s why in beef, you can easily see a layer of fat, then the flesh. The division of the fat from the flesh perhaps makes it easy for a disintegration to occur between flesh from its inherent fat and blood.

This fact is discussed in Leviticus 3: 17-“You must never eat any fat or blood. This is a permanent law for you, and it must be observed from generation to generation, wherever you live.”

(This will be discussed in more detail in this article.)

One of the first definitions of an animal whose flesh is unclean is that it retains its blood. Not that an unclean animal will not bleed or die when fatally wounded, rather, there is a principle and mechanism in such animals that causes them to hold on to a large amount of their blood and this toxic blood cannot be removed making it unfeasible to eat such animals without consuming this blood that is impossible to disintegrate, separate or disentangle. So, in God giving the commandment to Noah and later on to the Jews on what could and couldn’t be eaten, this was His unique way of letting us know that

  • Blood must not be consumed from the animals that it can be separated from.
  • Animals whose flesh retains the blood have to be avoided.

It is noteworthy that such animals in the latter group are mostly those that eat other animals or are scavengers.

Therefore, just as we would not eat ALL green plants as some serve other purposes besides being food, a discerning factor is given here for animals as well.

In this analysis of the first four verses of Genesis 9, it becomes apparent that this is the first biblical record of God’s permission for man to use animal flesh for food. Again, it should be noted that this instruction includes the forbidding of any consumption of blood. Still, I have heard a few people cite verse 3 and erroneously assume that God made all living things good for meat. However, they all overlook the yardstick or criteria given to properly decipher this rule. Upon closer inspection one would notice that the standard for measuring this is the phrase: “even as the green herb.”

In other words (not to rephrase God per se) what God could be saying was “With the same discerning criteria that applies to what kind of green plants (herbs) you can eat from, there is a criteria that applies to what kind of animals you may now eat from”

Now, I ask, can humans eat all plants including poisonous ones? Of course not.

Consequently, we can no more eat all types of meat than we can eat all plants, including poisonous ones.
