The Bible and Alcohol Part 2

Here’s the continuation to part 1 of this article…

What About Jesus’ First Miracle Where He Changed Water into Wine?

Now, at a wedding in Cana Jesus is said to have changed water into wine.

Many Scholars believe Jesus made fresh grape juice or something other than alcoholic wine simply due to the fact that He who was sinless would not intentionally make a condemned substance.

Let’s face it, He would never have made a drink that causes people to lose visual acuity, mental acuity, bodily motor control and that leads to ravings, fighting, vomiting, memory-loss, cirrhosis of the liver, black-outs and loss of brain mass.

Now, if you say: “Oh, everything in moderation…”

Suffice it to say the average Christian wouldn’t advocate adultery in moderation, or murder in moderation so why would you advocate taking Alcohol in moderation?

Didn’t Jesus Drink Wine at the Last Supper?

Well, according to many Bible Scholars, the answer is NO!
At the Last Supper Jesus passed around the cup of and said “This cup is the New Testament in my blood, which is poured out for you.” (Luke 22:20)

Come on, how could Jesus Christ say that the symbol of the Christian Church and the New Covenant was the forbidden drink Alcoholic Yayin?

In addition, here are two reasons why it could not have been alcohol.

  1. Alcohol is created by adding leaven (yeast) to grapes and then processing it at the right temperature.
  2. Jesus was celebrating the feast of the Passover when all leaven/yeast is removed from Israel. Anyone eating bread with yeast or any product that had yeast in it was “cut off from Israel”. Jesus was eating unleavened bread and drinking unleavened grape juice.

That being said; take a look at these verses from the Bible:
Proverbs 31:4 says “It is not for kings to drink wine, nor for princes strong drink.”

Leviticus 10:9 says “You and your descendants must never drink wine or any other alcoholic drink before going into the Tabernacle. If you do, you will die. This is a permanent law for you, and it must be observed from generation to generation.”

Ephesians 5:18 says “Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit.”

Now, take a look at these verses

Matt 5: 13-16: says “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men. You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.”

1 Peter 2:9 says “But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.”

Rev 1:6 says “and He has made us to be a kingdom and priests to serve his God and Father–to him be glory and power for ever and ever! Amen.”

Do you notice all of the last three verses says we are going to be (if not already) “kings and priests” and ARE models and light for the world?

Therefore since Christians are kings, priests and models for the world, then it is not for Christians to drink wine or strong drink. In fact, it’s not for Christians to break any of God’s laws but rather be role models for others to copy so they too can be drawn to God and bettering themselves.

So, if your pastor or anyone teaches otherwise (basically that it is okay to drink alcohol or eat unclean meats etc), he is following a spirit of falsehood.

No wonder the Bible says in Micah 2:11 that “Suppose a prophet full of lies would say to you, “I’ll preach to you the joys of wine and alcohol!” That’s just the kind of prophet you would like!”

Well, the Bible says again:

“Blessed are they that do God’s commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city, (v14)  because outside the city (New Jerusalem) are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, AND WHOSOEVER LOVES A LIE AND MAKES A LIE.” (V15) (REVELATION 22:14 -15)

Now, I don’t drink at all. I have tasted alcohol, beer and Nigerian Palm wine as a kid out of curiosity and after tasting some of these products once I came to a shocking conclusion. They DO NOT taste good.

I think you certainly have to acquire a taste for them. The stuff that seems to taste good is covered up by so much juice and other products to give it a good taste. I think many people want the alcohol because it may mask the pain of sadness, depression, divorce, business failure, guilt, abuse, and self doubt.

Some other people want the alcohol to fit in, to relax, to unwind after a stressful day.

However, if alcohol was harmless then that would be fine but it is not harmless it is very dangerous.

So, if you are a Christian, I would recommend you avoid drinking alcohol. What are your chances that you could minister to someone if they see you holding a glass of alcohol in your hand?

If for whatever reason you are not a believer per se, read the medical facts provided about the dangers of alcohol in the beginning of this section about Alcohol and remember what God (backed up by science and medical facts) says in Hosea 4:11 “My people, Sexual sins, strong drink, and new wine ruin a person’s ability to think straight!”
