Sugar, Fats and….The Bible?

Friends, a serious problem with Western diets is the high consumption of refined carbohydrates. Populations that consume large amounts of refined carbohydrates experience higher rates of diabetes and other related problems, but the Bible clearly speaks against this type of eating. Solomon was even inspired to record: “It is not good to eat much honey” (Proverbs 25:16, 27). The biblical principle is to use sweeteners with caution. However, because of the increasing intake of sodas (more than 50 gallons per person each year in the United States), pastries, candies, and pre-sweetened foods, many people ingest more than 100 pounds of refined sugars on a yearly basis again, to their detriment!

Some health experts have recently suggested that owing to genetic variations, we have different feeding requirements. In other words, they state that we need to eat the right food according to our genes. However, although each individual is genetically unique, an observation of nature depicts that all members of a given species eat the same food in spite of genetic differences among individuals. For example, all lions eat flesh. You don’t find some lions that thrive on zebras and some that graze on grass?!

Therefore, it should be noted that the form and physiology of any species is specifically created to ensure that individuals can find, consume, and digest the food needed for survival. Humans do not have the speed, power, teeth, or claws to catch, kill, and eat swift prey, even if some could argue that chickens and cattle could be caught, well, how many people can kill them right away and eat them raw without tools or cooking with a lot of condiments. Humans are designed to thrive on whole plants and this might be the safest option in our modern times because let’s face it, not to preach any dogma or propaganda here, it’s quite difficult to adhere to the permissible meat eating laws in Leviticus in our times. For one, the animals previously made clean are rendered unclean by them not eating what they are designed to eat anymore, furthermore, an additional requirement was for the animal to be slaughtered before consumption, not killed and stored for days or weeks as is the practice in several supermarkets. Granted we do have refrigeration, however, who really knows where these animals come from these days?

It should be noted that the beef in Jesus’ day was scarce and of a different type than is most often found today. Reportedly, red meat was nearly always a specialty food or delicacy set aside for feasts, weddings, holidays, and banquets. Lambs were slaughtered annually for the keeping of the Passover Feast. Although, several Jews may have eaten beef at some point in their lives, most would not have eaten it daily or even weekly for that matter. For the most part, animals were not kept for their meat. Cattle were prized for their ability to perform labor.

As an observant Jew, we do know that Jesus and his disciples would not have eaten pork or any unclean meat, they did not eat fat, and would have eaten other meats sparingly making sure they were slaughtered and as fresh as possible.

Therefore, if you must eat animal flesh, for optimal health, it is highly recommended that you avoid high processed meats, such as hot dogs, bologna, sausages, cold cuts, ham, bacon, and most packaged luncheon meats, wieners, etc. as they are usually made of the waste products of meat, and many have animal hair and other matter ground up as part of the processed meat. These products are usually high in fat, and usually have nitrites and nitrates added during the curing process which is making a not so good thing actually very bad-or worse. These nitrites and nitrates are converted to nitrosamines in the digestive tract which have been associated with an increased risk of cancer. On a related note, If you think you don’t eat pork or pig byproducts, but you eat beef, chicken, or turkey sausages, you may still be consuming swine in minuscule amounts considering that today most non-pork sausages are cased in pork intestines.

In addition, in regards to Pork Sausage, when it comes to meats, sausage is probably one of the worst offenders. Sausage, especially pork sausage, is loaded with undesirable, unhealthy fat. Often, it is also heavily processed and seasoned with spices and chemicals. Very tellingly, The European Food Safety Authority recently found that a red food coloring in cheap sausages could also cause cancer. Furthermore, when it comes to Bacon and Salami, though to most it may appear tasty, what brings this about is the high amounts of fat and salt it has. Bacon is one of the meats containing the highest fat content. It is also cured with chemicals and preservatives. Salami is just as bad as bacon, as it is cured with the same chemicals. You can easily tell salami is very fatty because you can obviously see the white fat wedged throughout the slices of pepperoni.

The biblical guidelines related to red meat also relates to poultry or chicken because today chickens, like cattle, are usually given large amounts of steroids, growth hormones, and antibiotics during the farming process. Therefore, again what is a permissibly clean animal, is now rendered unsafe. Furthermore, this means that eggs from such chickens have those same steroids, hormones, and antibiotics in them.

Dear Friends, personally, I don’t eat meat anymore not only for the health reasons listed all over this blog, but because of the hassle that goes into preparing it. Why go through all that work for something God said I “MAY” not “MUST” eat if I can get all my nutrients elsewhere without compromising the pleasure of taste. I will like to believe most people will agree with me on that.

Well, it is my hope that you must be informed by now on why the LORD, through His word has laid down guidelines for us to adhere to when it comes to eating right.
