Should Christians Do Yoga?

This is a question that needs to be answered since a major part of yoga is stretching.  There is nothing wrong with stretching at all.  In fact stretching is a very useful exercise to help people stay healthy.  Personally, I have practiced yoga dedicatedly since about 2002 and it is to the point now that I know when not to meddle with certain aspects of it such as chanting, meditating on symbols, psychic breathing exercises etc.

Furthermore, the Sivananda Style of Yoga that I practice calls for a prayer before starting a routine, which is right up my alley as a Christian. So, instead of chanting what the practice says in worship of some ‘sun god’, I simply say the Lord’s Prayer and do my thing.

For me, doing the physical aspects of yoga for exercise will be pretty much the same thing as doing any other body-weight exercise. In fact, the popular calisthenics such as burpees, Hindu Squats and Push Ups, Regular Push Ups and even break dancing (believe it or not) seem to derive their root positions (and even motions) from Yoga.

The problem comes when one meditates and focuses on the religious aspects of yoga.  One needs to distinguish between purely stretching and yoga.  So if one is just purely stretching and is not practicing the philosophical and religious nature of yoga, then feel free to participate. To that effect, I have presented how Yoga could be used from a physical stand point only in my other book Yoga Fitness: Inside and Out available at

Nonetheless, if you would still rather do some other exercises besides Yoga, this book also contains simple bodyweight Calisthenics such as the Royal Court Exercises which consists of three exercises: The Bridge, Hindu Squats, and Hindu Pushups and have been popularized by Matt Furey who is a collegiate national wrestling champion (NCAA 2, 1985) and world Kung Fu Shuai-Chiao champion (Beijing, 1997).

In addition, I have also provided information about the Five Tibetan Rites hailed as The Ancient Secret of the Fountain of Youth.

This is an exercise program used by Tibetan monks to live long, vibrant and healthy lives. Many examples of the benefits of the “Five Tibetan Rites” consists of the following: looking much younger; sleeping soundly; waking up feeling refreshed and energetic; release from serious medical problems including difficulties with spines; relief from problems with joints; release from pain; better memory; arthritis relief; weight loss; improved vision; youthing instead of aging; greatly improved physical strength, endurance and vigor; improved emotional and mental health; enhanced sense of well being and harmony; and very high overall energy.

Will these exercises indeed make you look and feel younger?

Dear Friends, any regulated exercise routine, in conjunction with a proper diet, will make you look and feel younger-as long as you know what you are doing.

I personally recommend the exercises that lean more towards the use of one’s own body weight versus all the other cumbersome, expensive and at times dangerous equipment that other fitness routines may offer, which is why I have offered the option of Yoga, The Royal Court Exercises, The Five Tibetan Rites or basic Calisthenics to my readers.

In Friendship,
