How To Tell If You Are Suffering From Depression or Just Sad

It is recorded in John 11:35 that even Jesus, the Man many believe to be the Son of God, wept! So, suffice it to say, if He cried (which meant something must have made Him sad), it is only human to be sad, at least sometimes.

But when is it just being sad versus a more serious issue, Depression?

Folks, taking into consideration the fact that based on a recent poll of over 250, 000 respondents which indicated that 1 out of 6 American may be suffering from depression, it is of uttermost importance that one needs to know what the real indications of depression are in order to decipher what the scenario is.

As with all physical ailments, physical or mental, it’s best to nip it in the bud before it gets more serious.

That said, one major distinguishing factor between when you may just be sad or when you may be suffering from depression is when a person is diagnosed as being depressed chances are they have been experiencing the signs of depression for 2-6 months and unlike sadness, depression may not be something that you can just overcome or ‘snap out off’ just like that.

Now, in order to recognize what one is actually dealing with: Sadness or depression, here are the common signs of the latter.

1. Irritability and mood swings.

2. Hopelessness and an extremely negative outlook on life.

3. Lethargy, lack of vigor/energy.

4. Lack of interest in your normal hobbies, being groomed and associations with friends and loved ones.

5. Extreme feelings of helplessness and no self worth.

6. Contemplating Suicide (in extreme cases)

7. Lack of or even excessive sleep.

8. Inexplicable weight loss or gain thereof (mostly triggered by eating disorders)

My friends, although this is not a conclusive list as characteristics vary by patient, these indications of depression listed above are the most common ones.

Therefore, if you happen to experience any of these symptoms, try as much as possible to thoroughly assess your situation to see what it is that could be triggering these symptoms of depression within you.

I will conclude by saying that arguably the most important thing to consider here is not to let the situation intensify to a point where it can’t be addressed with more ease.

So if you think it may be depression, remember a stitch in time saves nine.
