How to Determine How Fit We Really Are

Folks, what is fitness really?

I mean, most people work out and most people want to be fit, in shape and healthy.

But what does it REALLY MEAN to be fit?

Well, when it comes to fitness and what it is, for our thorough knowledge of that, exercise scientists have identified nine elements that comprise the definition of fitness.

The following lists each of the nine elements and an example of how they can be used or tested respectively.

1. Strength –

This is defined as the limit to which muscles can apply force by contracting against resistance. For example, this can be tested by ones ability to move, hold or restrain an object or person.

2. Power –

This is defined as the capacity to exert maximum muscular tightening instantly in an explosive burst of movements. This can be tested for instance in several anaerobic exercise spurts like sprinting, jumping etc.

3. Agility –

This is defined as the ability to execute a number of explosive power movements in quick time sequences. Climbing ropes, moving on monkey bars or gymnastic stunts, can test this.

4. Balance –

This is defined as the capacity to control the body’s position, either dynamically (while moving) or in stationary state as in a yoga-headstand.

5. Flexibility –

This is defined as the ability to achieve a total range of motion without being blocked or hindered by excessive tissue, i.e. fat or muscle. A good example of this would be a leg split or touching the toes without bending the knees.

6.  Local Muscle Endurance –

This is defined as a single muscle’s ability to perform sustained work at a given time. This can be put to test in situations like Rowing (arm strength) or Cycling (leg strength)

7. Cardiovascular Endurance –

This is defined as the heart’s ability to deliver blood to working muscles and their ability to use it over a given (usual long) period of time. This can be best tested in situations like long distance running.

8.  Strength Endurance –

This is defined as the muscle’s ability to perform a maximum contraction repetitively. This can be put to test in such activities as basketball, boxing, and soccer, even construction.

9.  Co-ordination –

This is defined as the ability to combine all the other 8 components listed above so that effective movements are achieved.

Now, coming from a yoga back-ground and from basically leaning more towards body-weight exercises, suffice it to say that through the practice of the Sun Salutations outlined elsewhere, the nine elements are greatly enhanced and more so when combined with the recommended poses exclusively or in combination with various calisthenics.
