Common Bible Verses That May Confuse Us About The Proper Diet 4

Naturally, people may still ask:

“Ok, but why do so many translations seem to say that He declared all foods clean?”

Well, for one the ORIGINAL English Version does NOT say that.

In addition, this discussion took place in a social and historical context different than our own. Language and practice were based on the Word of God exclusively.

For instance, their holidays were those days set apart in the Bible for special observance, not modern man-made ones.

Their property rights were those of the Bible, not modern man-made ones.

So, only those things that were not “defiled”, “unclean” were considered food, everything else was not.

Therefore, reading Mark 7:19 as they would have, it means,

“Thus He declared all things-given-by- God-as food to be clean, regardless of ritual hand washing.”

As I have stated herewith, it should be noted that in the time that these events were written, it was common and accepted knowledge that everyone simply ate what “God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth…. For it is sanctified (set aside) by the word of God and prayer (See 1 Timothy 4:3-5)

Other reasons why it’s incorrect to say Jesus declared ‘all foods’ clean are the following:

-REASON #1. If he in fact did so, Peter, his rock on who Jesus built his church, (Matthew 16:18) surely did not know of such a declaration.

What we find much later in Acts 10 is that Peter, in a vision, saw heaven opened, and a certain vessel descending unto him, as it had been a great sheet knit at the four corners, and let down to the earth: Wherein were all manner of four-footed beasts of the earth, and wild beasts, and creeping things, and fowls of the air. And there came a voice to him, Rise, Peter; kill, and eat.

Act 10:14 but Peter said, not so, Lord; for I have never eaten any thing that is common or unclean.

So if Jesus had declared all things clean, Peter must not have been aware of it, because here he says, “I have never eaten any thing that is common or unclean”, and he still had no intention to, even after the voice told him to kill and eat.

Surely Peter would have understood something as fundamental as whether Jesus had canceled the laws of clean and unclean meat. Yet, years after Christ’s death and resurrection, when he experienced a vision of unclean animals accompanied by a voice telling him to “kill and eat,” Peter refused.

What is ironic is many believe the purpose of this vision was to do away with the dietary restrictions regarding clean and unclean meats.

However, if indeed Jesus had already done so in Mark chapter 7 as is commonly believed, do you notice Peter’s initial response? He obviously did not consider these laws as having been rescinded by Christ!

So many people will tell you that it was right there when Peter had the vision, that God made all things clean, but as has been discussed in elsewhere in this blog, that is sure not the message Peter got from it.

This strange vision came to Peter three times, yet he still “wondered within himself what this vision which he had seen meant” (verses 16-17) and “thought about the vision” (verse 19). Peter did not jump to conclusions as too many do today. He already knew what the vision did not mean. Later God revealed the true meaning: “God has shown me that I should not call any man common or unclean” (verse 28).

Peter came to realize that the significance of the vision was that God was opening the way of salvation to gentiles (non-Israelites), so Peter shortly thereafter baptized the first uncircumcised gentiles God called into the Church (verses 34-35, 45-48).

-REASON #2: If you fast forward to Acts 15: 20, there was a council in Jerusalem that still insisted on the principle of clean and unclean meats. Furthermore, In the Acts of the Apostles, 15:29, we find that the original disciples still differentiate between clean and unclean foods, and this time Paul is in agreement with them. Six chapters later, in Acts 21:25, their decision to impose food regulations on believers is mentioned without regret, and this time Paul demonstrated his full agreement with them.

-REASON #3: In describing the end-time events leading up to the return of Christ, the book of Revelation uses the expression “a haunt for every unclean and hated bird!” (Revelation 18:2) So, it’s clear as day that this principle is in fact still in effect.

-REASON #4: Jesus never otherwise makes a pronouncement directly against God’s law as set out in Scripture.

-REASON #5: Such a teaching by Jesus would have caused a sensation not mentioned or recorded.

-REASON #6: Along with the rest of the related passage (Mark 7:14–15) Jesus appears not to be declaring as clean food of a species declared unclean by God, but only declaring that food of a clean species did not become unclean by contamination (the teaching was spurred, after all, by a question on hand washing).

-REASON #7: Jesus’ supposed declaration is never cited or mentioned in the early debates between Jewish and Gentile Christians over food laws.

-REASON #8: These points, along with the problematic translations, seem to weaken the position that Jesus did in fact declare all foods clean.

Besides, let’s always remember something else: If God “purified unclean foods,” the physical world should now exist with an absence of the risk in consuming them. That is there will be NO diseases or illnesses currently attached to eating meat the wrong way. (That is consuming unclean animals, blood and fat consumption etc).

Therefore, Why would God or Jesus have us eat the things that could harm us and make us sick?

I mean God himself shows a link between our poor health as Christians and a disregard for his laws in this verse: “But their children, too, rebelled against me. They refused to keep my decrees and follow my regulations, even though obedience would have given them life..” Ezekiel 20:21

As we have seen, it is noteworthy that the NIV version of the Bible actually says Jesus “Declared all Foods Clean” in Mark 7:19.

However, that is indeed a fallacy and this should actually be disturbing to the body of Christ considering what I am about to divulge herewith.
