Bible Tip #2 For Better Health-Observe Basic Sanitation and Cleanliness

In direct opposite of the unhealthy medical treatments of the Egyptians, God referred and recommended cleanliness to His people, the Israelites. It’s safe to say the saying or idiomatic expression “Cleanliness is next to Godliness” does have some biblical significance after all.

Most persons with some degree of education-be it formal or informal-will agree that there is a connection between hygiene and health. Suffice it to say that the major diseases and epidemics that have killed millions through the years generally stemmed from people not being clean & sanitary. One standout example is Cholera, very tellingly, this has been one of the major killer diseases throughout history and it is said to be prevalent when sanitation principles are ignored. When it goes unchecked, it can spread like wildfire even on a global scale.

Two examples come to mind:

1.      A cholera pandemic which began in India in 1817, that spread to China, Sri Lanka, East Africa, the Philippines, Japan, Persia, Arabia and Russia.

2.      Another outbreak which began in India in 1826, that spread to mainland Europe and the British Isles.

Reportedly, from the British Isles, it crossed the Atlantic to Canada, and then it made its way to the United States, appearing in Chicago and spreading south into the Mississippi Valley. Also, “it appeared concurrently in New York City and Boston and spread south and west, so that by 1836 cholera was present in most of the U.S. and did not disappear until 1838″ (Encyclopaedia Britannica, 1961, “Cholera”).

It should be noted that even in this age, cholera is common to many parts of the world and breaks out when unsanitary conditions exist. This is applicable when the proper removal of sewage is not applied. Very tellingly, this is due to the fact that the disease is usually spread from the feces of cholera victims. So, suffice it to say that if people practice (or practiced) proper sanitary measures, cholera could be (or could have been) checked.

Unsurprisingly though, thousands of years ago, the Bible provided instructions that would prevent cholera and other similar epidemics: “ 12 Set up a place outside the camp to be used as a toilet area. 13 And make sure that you have a small shovel in your equipment. When you go out to the toilet area, use the shovel to dig a hole. Then, after you relieve yourself, bury the waste in the hole.”

(Deuteronomy 23:12-13

In regards to cleanliness, another example comes to mind, the death epidemics in Vienna.

Back in the 19th-century times, as was to be expected, virtually few people knew about bacteria. In Vienna, the capital and largest city of the Republic of Austria, Dr. Ignaz Semmelweis was horrified at the death rate of pregnant women who came to the hospital to give birth. At that time, the casualties were blamed on “labor fever.” Very tellingly, after the women died, medical students would perform autopsies and then immediately proceed to treat patients that were still alive! Now, the average person would wonder aloud in disbelief at such a practice, however believe it or not, that was the norm at the time.

As a result, after a lot of monitoring and observation, Dr. Semmelweis made a conclusion that turned things around immensely and it was based on the fact that it might be contaminants on the medical students’ hands that were responsible for spreading death from one patient to another. Thus he ordered the interns to wash their hands in chlorinated water. He then watched to see the results. “The history books tell us what happened next … In just three months the death rate fell from 18 percent to 1 percent” (ibid., p. 20). What is mind-boggling is in His Wisdom, more than 3,000 years earlier God had revealed to Moses the sanitary measures people were to take if they touched a corpse. First, they were to be considered “unclean” for seven days and had to wash with water on the third and seventh days (Numbers 19:12-13)

12]He shall purify himself with it on the third day, and on the seventh day he shall be clean: but if he purify not himself the third day, then the seventh day he shall not be clean.

[13]Whosoever toucheth the dead body of any man that is dead, and purifieth not himself, defileth the tabernacle of the LORD; and that soul shall be cut off from Israel: because the water of separation was not sprinkled upon him, he shall be unclean; his uncleanness is yet upon him.).

As long as a person was unclean, he was to avoid social contact with others. Even though it may have served as a ritualistic procedure, this law also literally served to protect others from exposure to harmful bacteria, even though people at the time did not know such things existed. Perhaps this is why the Lord said in the following verses not to eat anything NOT slaughtered or already dead:

Leviticus 11:40; Leviticus 17:15; Leviticus 22:8 Ezekiel 4:14
