Bible Tip #1 For Better Health- Obey God’s commandments

In addition to a sound dietetic base, here are some other sound keys to better physical and mental health. Here’s Tip #1

1.      Obey God’s commandments

The first principle, a foundational key to physical and mental health, is simply to obey God. We find this in Proverbs 3: “My son, do not forget my law, but let your heart keep my commands; for length of days and long life and peace they will add to you … It will be health to your flesh, and strength to your bones” (verses 1-2, 8).

It is plain to see that obedience to God’s commandments and other laws would promote health. As our Creator, He certainly knows what’s best for us.

Very tellingly, researchers have found that believing in God and living according to that belief brings significant health benefits.

In 1995, a Harvard Medical School conference was undertaken on the subject of faith and health. Apparently, one study reviewed at this conference discovered that weekly churchgoers in Maryland were less likely to die from heart attacks (50 percent less), emphysema (56 percent less) cirrhosis (74 percent less) and suicide (53 percent less)” than non-churchgoers (S.I. McMillen, M.D., and David Stern, M.D., None of These Diseases, 2000, p. 200).

Some biblical statements about health are specific. “If you diligently heed the voice of the Lord your God and do what is right in His sight, give ear to His commandments and keep all His statutes, I will put none of the diseases on you which I have brought on the Egyptians for I am the LORD that healeth thee.).” (Exodus: 15:26

Very tellingly, the same diseases that affect mankind today affected the Egyptians of Biblical times as  Autopsies on Egyptian mummies have shown evidence of tuberculosis, arteriosclerosis, arthritis, cancer, gallstones, bladder stones, schistosomiasis and smallpox” (Wycliffe, p. 459). So, dear friends, God-our Maker truly knows best!

Obedience to the laws of God is the key to mental health. “Great peace have they that love thy law,” David wrote in the Psalms (Psa. 119:165). Folks, remember this: God’s law is the way to a long life, happiness and peace (Prov. 3:1-2).

When God’s laws are summarized, they reflect a love of God by obeying him (for our own good) and a love for mankind. Love is the fulfilling of God’s law (I John 5:3, Rom. 13:10). Perfect, mature love casts out fear, worry, anxiety, depression, and the negative emotions which can wreck mental health (I John 4:18). This kind of love is outgoing concern for the welfare of other people, as opposed to self-centered, selfish concern for self. It is the attitude of giving to others, service to others, helpfulness (see Acts 20:35).

This kind of love leads to real mental health and emotional well-being. It overcomes the negative emotions of jealousy, envy, fear, hatred, vanity, worry, anxiety, inferiority, depression, discouragement and the effects it can have on us and developing this outgoing love is the road to mental health — the key to mental health!

This is because the way we think has a profound effect on our health and vitality. Negative thinking can destroy and hinder good health. On the other hand, positive thinking can strengthen and invigorate our health, and lead to radiant, robust health! It should be noted that the human mind has a direct and powerful effect over “matter” — our body and its functions! Solomon wrote in Proverbs concerning this principle:

“For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he” (Proverbs 23:7).

The effect of the mind and emotions on human health today is well documented as several books and articles have been written about it. It is worth mentioning that a psychosomatic illness is an emotionally-induced illness, where emotions lead directly to physical diseases, by lowering our resistance.

Therefore, positive emotions can be a powerful key to preventing disease, and helping to increase our resistance to them. (So, there is a direct link between spiritual improvement and regression as the case may be and an instinctive choice of diet.)

Paul wrote to the Philippians: “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, THINK ON THESE THINGS” (Philippians 4:8).

Therefore, if a person has true love for others, he will radiate cheerfulness and joy. It should be noted that the medical fraternity and science has discovered that being cheerful and happy are great antidotes for sickness and mental disorders. However, God inspired Solomon to write this thousands of years ago (931B.C. to be exact) as he said in (Prov. (17:22): “A merry heart doeth good like a medicine” (Prov. (17:22).

Suffice it to say that modern clinical evidence supports this statement of Solomon!

“Excellence is an art won by training and habituation. We do not act rightly because we have virtue or excellence, but we rather have those because we have acted rightly. We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit.”–Aristotle
